S2S – Adjust

Adjust is a mobile attribution platform. Combined with Affilae’s Server-to-Server tracking, it lets you track the installs and in-app events your affiliates generate. Affilae records the click, Adjust does the attribution, then sends the conversions back to Affilae.

Requirements Your program’s URL format must be set to Server-to-Server (S2S), under Configuration then Global settings. Your app must embed the Adjust SDK, with the events to track already created in Adjust, and the purchase event must send its amount and currency. You also need admin or editor access to Adjust.

How it works

  1. The visitor clicks an Affilae tracking link.
  2. Affilae records the click and sends the visitor to your Adjust link. That link carries Affilae’s callback address, in which Affilae puts the click ID.
  3. Adjust does the attribution, not Affilae.
  4. When a user attributed to that link completes a configured event, Adjust calls Affilae’s callback.
  5. Affilae matches the conversion to the click and computes the commission.

Step 1, create an Adjust link for Affilae

  1. In Adjust, open Campaign Lab > Custom links and create a new link dedicated to Affilae.
  2. In the link’s destinations, enter an address of your website for visitors sent to the web, on desktop in particular: Affilae will replace it with the page chosen by the affiliate.
  3. Copy the link you get.

With a custom domain, the link looks like this (otherwise it starts with https://app.adjust.com/):

https://your-brand.go.link/?adj_t=XXXXXXX&adj_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.your-website.com%2F

Step 2, add the Affilae callback to the link

Adjust sends conversions back to Affilae through callbacks added to the link, one per event you want to reward.

  1. In Affilae, pick the commission rule for app sales and note its Key. We recommend a rule dedicated to the app, separate from your website rules.
  2. In Adjust, note the token of the event to reward (event token), for iOS and for Android.
  3. Prepare the callback URL below, replacing YOUR_AFFILAE_KEY with the rule’s key.
  4. Add this callback to your link with Adjust’s Encoding tool, entering the event’s iOS and Android tokens. The tool adds an adj_event_callback_… parameter to the link (event_callback_… on an app.adjust.com link).
https://lb.affilae.com/?key=YOUR_AFFILAE_KEY&id={adid}_{created_at}&cids={ClickID}&amount={revenue_float}&currency={currency}
Parameter What it does
keyThe key of the Affilae commission rule
idThe conversion identifier: {adid} (the device) and {created_at} (the event time)
cidsThe click ID. Keep {ClickID} as is: Affilae fills it in on every click.
amountThe sale amount, in currency units: {revenue_float}
currencyThe sale currency: {currency}
The amount: {revenue_float}, never {revenue} {revenue} gives the amount in cents: a €24.99 sale would come in as a €2,499 sale. Always use {revenue_float}.
Allow Adjust to share the amount Without this setting, Adjust sends the callback without an amount, and sales come in at 0. In Adjust, open AppView, your app, Data management, Dynamic ad network data access, and turn on In-app revenue.
One unique identifier per conversion Affilae counts one conversion per identifier and per rule. Keep {created_at} in id: with an identifier that only depends on the device, a customer’s second purchase would be ignored.

To reward installs too, add an install callback the same way (adj_install_callback), with the key of a rule dedicated to installs.

Step 3, configure Affilae

  1. In Affilae, open Configuration.
  2. Open the Global settings section.
  3. Open URL tracking management.
  4. Check that the program’s URL format is set to Server-to-Server (S2S).
  5. Turn on Redirect clicks through an attribution partner (advanced). The next two fields only appear once it is on.
  6. Paste your Adjust link, callbacks included, into Partner redirection URL.
  7. In Landing page query parameter, enter the parameter of your link that holds your website address, adj_redirect for instance. If there are several, separate them with commas (adj_deep_link,adj_redirect, for instance).
Both fields are required The first says where to go through, the second which parameter Affilae puts the real landing page in. With only one of them, links do not go through Adjust, and in-app sales are not attributed to your affiliates. Never enter a callback parameter in the second field.
Your affiliates only use Affilae links Never give your Adjust link to your affiliates: paste it into your program configuration, and the Link builder adds it automatically to their tracked links. Your affiliates create their links in Affilae with the address of a page of your website, never with a Adjust link.

Step 4, the final test

Adjust attributes one install per device. Prepare your phone before each test.

Forget the device before each test The Adjust Insights app gives you your phone’s advertising ID. Before each test, uninstall the app, then, in Adjust, open the Testing Console, enter that ID and click Forget device.
On iPhone, allow tracking before you test Depending on the privacy model chosen in Adjust, an iPhone user who has not allowed tracking may trigger no callback to Affilae. On the test device, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking, turn on Allow Apps to Request to Track, then accept your app’s tracking request.
  1. Uninstall the app and forget the device in the Testing Console.
  2. Generate a test link in the Affilae Link builder, for one of your partnerships, and open it on the phone. Wait at least one minute between two clicks on the same link.
  3. Install the app, then open it.
  4. Trigger a configured event, a purchase for instance.
  5. Check the install and the event in the Testing Console. Allow up to 30 minutes.
  6. Finally, check that the conversion reaches Affilae, with its amount.
Tip Do not test the install only. Trigger at least one purchase: it is the purchase callback, with the rule’s key, that decides the commission.

Key points

  • The Affilae program must be in S2S.
  • One Adjust link dedicated to Affilae, with one callback per rewarded event.
  • The callback carries cids={ClickID}, amount={revenue_float} and an id unique to each conversion.
  • Revenue sharing (In-app revenue) must be on in Adjust.
  • The Adjust link is pasted into the program configuration, never given to affiliates.
  • Testing is done on a device forgotten in the Testing Console, on iPhone with tracking allowed.

S2S switches your links to redirection and validates the conversion server side. That is what lets Adjust send conversions to Affilae. Without that setting, the integration cannot work.

In Affilae, open Configuration, Tracking tab, expand Integration via an Affilae plugin and pick the rule in Rules and currencies: its Key appears.

Check three things: revenue sharing is on in Adjust (Dynamic ad network data access > In-app revenue), the app sends the amount with the purchase event, and the callback uses {revenue_float}.

{revenue} gives the amount in cents, {revenue_float} in currency units. Affilae expects units: 24.99 for €24.99.

The id most likely stays the same from one purchase to the next. Affilae counts one conversion per identifier and per rule: use id={adid}_{created_at}.

No. Paste it into your program configuration: the Link builder adds it automatically to your affiliates’ tracked links. An Adjust link shared as is, or inserted by hand into an Affilae link, may not record clicks and conversions.

No. The callbacks added to the link only fire for users attributed to that link.
