Glossary of affiliate marketing terms

This non exhaustive list of definitions is here to help you familiarize yourself with some of the more basic terms used in affiliate marketing platforms. If you find that any terms are missing or anything is unclear, do not hesitate to contact us and let us know.

Advertiser
Website / company looking to increase their sales / leads via an affiliate program.
Publisher
Website / company looking to monetize their audience by promoting and relaying advertising elements of affiliate programs.
Affiliate
An affiliate is a publisher having subscribed and partnered with an affiliate program.
Affiliate program
A collection of rules outlining the requirements for affiliate partnerships: commission attribution rules, payments, terms and conditions etc...
Affiliate platform
Website / company which enables advertisers and publishers to work together on affiliate marketing campaigns.
Conversion
An action commissioned by an advertiser, such as generating a client lead via a form or generating an online sale.
CPA
Cost Per Action. A term utilized to designate the attribution of a percentage based commission for an amount converted (eg. Cost Per Sale, etc).
CPL
Cost Per Lead. A term utilized to designate the attribution of a flat fixed fee commission for every qualified customer lead generated by a publisher.
CPC
Cost Per Click. A monetization model most commonly utilized by search engines like Google Adwords, Bing etc. An advertiser basically pays a publisher a flat amount every time a visitor clicks through a link promoted by a publisher.
